At the beginning of summer, the authors of this blog posted reading lists of books we would read over summer. This is an update on what Grant has read this summer, since he leaves for Malawi tomorrow, and tonight (to be spent at Dodger Stadium as Zack Greinke pitches a gem) marks the end of his summer. For the original post, see here. Continue reading “End of Summer Reading List Update, 2015 (Grant)”
Concerning the Fear of Man, Part V: A Disharmony of the Gospels
Now that we’ve looked at the Fear of Man in Proverbs, I want to do the same through the Gospels, finding relevant passages and noting some basic interpretation of them. We’ll dis-harmonize the Gospels and look only at Matthew in this post. Continue reading “Concerning the Fear of Man, Part V: A Disharmony of the Gospels”
Concerning the Fear of Man, IV: Concluding the Proverbial Word Study
In order to finish our study of the fear of man in Proverbs promptly, I’m mostly just going to list references for you to look at by clicking my links and using your eyeballs. I will comment on some verses that do not appear to belong. Most of what I wanted to say philosophically and doctrinally has already been said in my previous three posts though. Another Look at Disney Pixar’s Inside Out
The latest work of Disney’s Pixar Animation Studio is Inside Out, a movie which focuses on our emotions and how they interact with our daily lives, set inside the mind of a growing pre-teenage girl named Riley. Continue reading “Another Look at Disney Pixar’s Inside Out”
Concerning the Fear of Man, III: A Proverbial Word Study
A Proverbial word study is a word study through the book of Proverbs. Thanks for asking. Only as we saw last time, an actual word study may not be as effective as a more general concept study. We already know how the book of Proverbs lands on the issue of the fear of man. Consider Proverbs 29:25 and Proverbs 1:7: Continue reading “Concerning the Fear of Man, III: A Proverbial Word Study”
Of Thomas Brooks And Inside Out
I apologize for the title image, but jokes involving Thomas the Tank Engine and actual brooks are practically obligatory when talking about Thomas Brooks.
And now for something completely different: A review of a movie review.
Some Summer Reading, Part III: Calvin’s List
It’s summer! School is out and the weather’s great. For most of us, what we would like to do is curl up in a little ball and spend our time in bed with our best friends Youtube and Netflix. For me, I would consider myself part of that population. I love to lounge around with friends and watch random videos in groggy hot weather. Continue reading “Some Summer Reading, Part III: Calvin’s List”
Some Summer Reading, Part II: Chris’ List
As a college student, finding large chunks of time to read books outside the bible are few and far between in the midst of homework, tests, ministry, and other extracurriculars. Since it’s summer, it is definitely an opportune time to pursue knowledge and growth. I’d really encourage it! Continue reading “Some Summer Reading, Part II: Chris’ List”
Some Summer Reading, Part I: Grant’s List
Christians will endeavor to improve and redeem our time, as befits those to whom the command of Ephesians 5:16 was given. As summer starts, many of us do that by reading books, to improve and refine our analytical, philosophical, and theological powers of thought, to the application of both our own personal worldviews and daily lives. In light of these undertakings, the authors of this blog think it will be of great edification to ourselves and our readers that such books as we will be reading here be disclosed. In this post, Grant will list those books he intends to read this summer. Chris and Calvin’s respective lists are forthcoming in future weeks. We hope you may perhaps find a book here that would be helpful to your spiritual growth. And please feel free to comment with questions regarding these books or with reading suggestions of your own. Concerning the Fear of Man, II: A Failed Word Study
When I first wanted to study the concept of the fear of man, I wanted to do a word study in the Bible for phrases like, “Fear of man.” However, I wasn’t actually sure our English Bibles ever used that particular phrase. It turns out they do. Once. Seriously, I got a pdf of the Not Inspired Version (NIV) and searched for, “Fear of man.” Same with the Elect Standard Version (ESV). It returns, in the translation that Paul used (NASB), Proverbs 29:25. Continue reading “Concerning the Fear of Man, II: A Failed Word Study”
